Finding Homes & SDA

Finding Homes & SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation)

Tailoring Solutions for Better Living

Everyone deserves a safe and comfortable place to call home, and this year, we’ve made great progress in finding just that for our clients. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) has been a big focus, and we’re here to help understand and navigate this complex part of the NDIS.

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) refers to housing specifically designed to support people with significant disabilities. It provides tailored environments that help people live comfortably and independently.

At Community Living Australia, we distinguish between SDA and Supported Independent Living (SIL), with SDA focusing on the housing itself and SIL on the support services provided within that housing.

Getting the right home means matching clients with housemates they get along with and making sure everyone can live their best lives in a place they love. Well-designed SDA homes are a game-changer, offering spaces that are specifically built to meet the needs of people living with disability. SDA houses offer long-term affordable leasing arrangements and are designed to support independence.

With a tight housing market, SDA gives our clients another option to explore where they can be involved in every step of choosing and designing their homes. It’s truly rewarding to see our clients participate in setting up their homes and watch the process come to life.

At Community Living Australia, we focus on helping clients understand SDA and what steps are needed to see if they’re eligible. We’re also involved in finding and where possible, designing their homes. By partnering with SDA providers who share our values, we make sure clients are at the heart of decision making, have a say in their living spaces, and get the right options for their needs.

We’re always on the lookout for SDA providers who understand our commitment to long-term positive outcomes for clients. Our goal is to ensure our clients have plenty of options and are supported in finding what works best for them, without us trying to be everything for everyone.

If you’re looking into SDA options or need help finding a new home, we encourage you to get in touch with our team. Starting the conversation early helps us understand your needs and preferences so we can guide you to the best solution.

Keep an eye on our social media and website for an upcoming event about SDA in late 2024 or reach out to express your interest.

Working in the Now

Working in the Now

Innovation, Transparency, and Client-Centered Solutions

In the ever-changing world of the NDIS, staying true to our core values and adapting to new developments is essential. This year, Community Living Australia has focused on “working in the now”—adjusting to changes while staying responsive to the needs and voices of our clients.

Listening to our clients and designing services around their feedback is at the heart of what we do. Our Client Advisory Board plays a crucial role in this process, offering direct insights into what our clients need and how they feel about our services. For instance, when clients expressed a desire to know who would be supporting them and when, we responded by starting the development of an app to meet this need, underscoring our commitment to staying current and responsive.

As we focus on the ‘now’, we’ve also been preparing for the future by enhancing our information and technology systems. The goal is to ensure that all parts of the organisation work seamlessly together, reducing duplication and providing our staff with the tools they need to be effective and transparent. We’re excited about completing our systems project, which will boost efficiency and empower our staff and clients in the coming year.

Transparency and honesty guide everything that we do. This year, we’ve emphasised open communication with our clients about the realities of service planning and delivery. Responsible service planning involves understanding each client’s unique needs and resources and working collaboratively to make the most of their support sustainably, particularly when funding arrangements fall short. While this sometimes involves challenging conversations, we remain committed to honesty and clarity, aiming to foster a trusting and authentic relationship with our clients and their families.

Creating strong connections across our regions has been essential for our teamwork and working in the now. One of our most effective initiatives has been “Over the Coffee Pot,” a monthly online catchup that everyone in the organisation can join. These sessions improve communication and collaboration among Team Leaders, Managers, and staff. By encouraging open conversations, we strengthen our team spirit, celebrate our achievements, tackle challenges, and keep learning and growing together.

At Community Living Australia, we’re committed to adapting and improving, which helps us support our clients and staff now and into the future. We’re excited about the opportunities ahead and will keep striving to provide the highest level of support and care for our clients and staff.

Client Advisory Board

Empowering Client Voices

Change starts with listening to our people and our Client Advisory Board plays a crucial role in providing feedback on how our clients are feeling, how we can enhance our services, and any challenges that need addressing. These valuable insights, experiences and suggestions go directly to our Chief Executive and Board of Directors making sure the organisation is responsive and inclusive.

Meeting monthly, the Client Advisory Board operates independently with a diverse group of clients and an external Chair. Their impactful contributions help us continually refine and enhance our approach, making a significant difference in how we deliver our services.

Are you interested in being part of the Client Advisory Board? We’re currently looking for new members!
